Texts Cited in Śikṣāsamuccaya
Much of the Śikṣāsamuccaya is in the words of others. Śāntideva built the text around twenty-seven verses of his own, and supported them with hundreds of passages drawn from the sūtras and treatises of the Mahāyāna, each chosen to illustrate a point of the bodhisattva's training. Many of these works survive today only in Tibetan or Chinese translation, so the passages Śāntideva quoted are, for several of them, among the few witnesses to their original Sanskrit.
The list below gathers the works he quotes, as they have been identified in the text. Beside each title is the number of times that work is quoted; a single quotation may run to several pages. Follow a title to the work's own page, where each passage Śāntideva drew from it is shown with a link to the place where it appears in the bilingual layout. Identifying the sources is ongoing work, and the list will grow as it continues.
Where a work has been commented on, its page also lists the commentaries: the Indian commentaries preserved in the Tibetan Tengyur and the principal Tibetan commentaries identified to date, drawing on the AIBS database, rKTs, and BDRC. For most of the sūtras Śāntideva quotes, no commentary survives; others, such as the Śālistambasūtra and the Daśabhūmikasūtra, were explained at length by Indian and Tibetan commentators. This list, too, is not exhaustive, and we welcome word of any commentary we have missed.
