Description
The Saptamaithunasamyuktasūtra ("Sūtra about Seven Forms of Sexual Intercourse") is a Sanskrit Buddhist sūtra quoted by Śāntideva in the Śikṣāsamuccaya in the context of a discussion of sexual misconduct and the requirements of genuine celibacy. The passage, addressed to a brahmin, enumerates seven ways in which a person who claims to be celibate is in fact "engaged in intercourse": looking at women's bodies with attachment and remaining absorbed in that experience; playfully enjoying women's company and conversation; enjoying attending upon women; enjoying the sounds of women's dancing and singing from behind a wall or curtain; enjoying looking at a neighbor given over to the five forms of sensual pleasure; and dedicating the merit of celibacy toward rebirth in the god-realm. The sūtra thus extends the concept of sexual misconduct beyond physical acts to encompass mental and sensory engagement with objects of desire, treating any form of attachment to sensory pleasure as incompatible with genuine celibacy. The text does not appear to survive as an independent Sanskrit recension and is not found in the Tibetan Kangyur. The content of the passage quoted by Śāntideva corresponds closely to the Pāli Aṅguttara Nikāya, specifically AN 7.50 (Methunasutta), which addresses the same seven forms of sexual attachment in a dialogue with the same brahmin interlocutor, Jāṇussoṇī. See SuttaCentral.
