Description
Tathāgatabimbaparivarta ("The Chapter on the Image of the Tathāgata") is cited once by Śāntideva in the Śikṣāsamuccaya, in the section on clearing away vile actions (pāpa). The cited passage illustrates, through the simile of washing away a foul smell with bathing and perfume, how even the five actions of immediate retribution (ānantarya) can be purified through faith in the Tathāgata and the making of images of the Tathāgata—a practice said to be especially effective for those who have generated the mind of awakening (bodhicitta) and for those who have left the household life for moral discipline. The text does not correspond to any known title in the Tibetan Kangyur. A small number of Sanskrit manuscript fragments possibly related to a text of this name have been identified in the Schøyen Collection and studied by Paul Harrison, Jens-Uwe Hartmann, and Kazunobu Matsuda (2016), though the identification there is treated as provisional.

Interconnections
1 Scholarship
This chapter presents two distinct sets of Sanskrit manuscript fragments from the Schøyen Collection: the final folio of a version of the Larger Sukhāvatīvyūhasūtra, and a separate group of fragments that the authors tentatively associate with a text called the Tathāgatabimbaparivarta—a title otherwise known only from a single citation in Śāntideva's Śikṣāsamuccaya, where it is invoked in connection with the purification of negative karma through faith in the Tathāgata and the making of Buddha images. The identification of the Schøyen fragments with this title is presented by the authors as provisional rather than certain.
