The Śikṣāsamuccaya ("Compendium of Training") is fundamentally a compendium of Mahāyāna scripture, built around root verses on the bodhisattva path—bodhicitta, the six perfections, the worship of buddhas and bodhisattvas, renunciation, and the realization of emptiness—each elaborated through extensive passages quoted directly from Mahāyāna sūtras. Śāntideva draws on dozens of distinct sūtras across the work. Because many of these texts survive only through the Śikṣāsamuccaya and are otherwise lost in their original Sanskrit, the text stands as a major source for the textual history of Indian Mahāyāna Buddhism, and its citations offer a window into which sūtras were in circulation for an eighth-century Indian Mahāyāna author. Tibetan authors, in turn, drew heavily on Śāntideva's digest when citing sūtra sources of their own.
