Analysis of D3878 and D3879[edit]

This page presents a simple analysis of two texts appearing next to each other in the Dege Tengyur purporting to be a "synopsis" or "summary" ("བསྡུས་པ") of The Bodhicaryāvatāra (BCA).

D3738: Bodhisattvacaryāvatāraṣaṭtriṃśatpiṇḍārtha[edit]

The title of this text might lead one to believe that there will be a summary or condensed version of the Bodhicaryāvatāra (BCA) given according to 36 topics (don) or at least in 36 sections or verses. However, upon analysis of the text, it is merely a selection of 80 verses of the root text copied and presented without any preamble or commentary whatsoever. In order to learn more about this text and clearly identify which verses of this text (Dege 3878) come directly from the BCA (Dege 3871) and thus identify if this text is an original composition, or contains any additional information or commentary, I arranged the Dege input of this text to clearly identify lines and verses and made notes of differences as compared with the Dege edition of the BCA and the BCA text we have associated with Padmakara's translation: Byang chub sems dpa'i spyod pa la 'jug pa rtsa ba dang 'grel pa (1990), si khron mi rigs dpe skrun khang. Once I reviewed the text in its entirety by hand, I used the BuddhaNexus website, which shows lines that appear in other texts throughout the canon and their relationship, to see if any further identifications can be made.

From this arrangement and comparison we can see that this Dege text (D3878) has no commentary or unique additions, no chapter headings or organizing principles, and is merely made of often exact copies of verses from the following chapters of the Dege edition of the BCA:

18 verses from Chapter 1: Benefit of bodhicitta (bodhicittānuśaṃsa).
6 verses from Chapter 2: Confession of faults (pāpadeśanā).
8 verses from Chapter 3: Embracing bodhicitta (bodhicittaparigraha).
6 verses from Chapter 4: Carefulness (bodhicittāpramāda).
6 verses from Chapter 5:  Vigilant Introspection (saṃprajanyarakṣaṇa).
10 verses from Chapter 6: Perfection of patience (kṣāntipāramitā).
12 verses from Chapter 7: Perfection of diligence (vīryapāramitā).
7 verses from Chapter 8: Perfection of concentration (dhyānapāramitā).
3.5 verses from Chapter 9: Perfection of wisdom (prajñāpāramitā).
4 verses from Chapter 10: Dedication (pariṇāmanā).

The text is composed of 80 verses, making 320 lines of text (not counting the title and homage and final short colophon). These lines are almost all 7 syllables, with the exception of the first seven verses of the text, which have lines of 9 syllables each, and another three verses (BCA 1.34, 1.35, and 2.1, and one verse that has an ending line in 8 syllables, BCA 1.30), all verses from chapter 1 of the BCA. Out of all the lines in this text, only 15 seem to have been rearranged significantly or come from an alternate source.

According to BuddhaNexus (their version is also ACIP input), there are 13 lines and two half-lines that do not match anywhere else in the canon, let alone the BCA root text. However, the search is slightly limited and looking at each line as I have done allows us to be more precise. There is only one complete four line verse (appearing between BCA 7.63 and 7.68 below) that I could not find a match to anywhere, including fuzzy matches with BuddhaNexus, so that single verse is the only real oddity, or perhaps it is the only uniquely composed verse in the whole text. There are only three other unidentified individual lines throughout the text. As for the three and a half verses from the ninth chapter, every single line is modified in some way or are not matched in the BCA text, but in the small text D3879, the bodhisattvacaryāvatārapiṇḍārtha. In fact, this text

A few other lines have minor spelling changes, but generally the spelling of whole verses is identical to BCA root verses. I have made notes of the few differences with the root verses of the BCA and rearrangements of lines where they occur in parentheses ().

So hard to find the ease and wealth28In order to progress toward enlightenment, it is necessary to possess eight forms of ease or freedom, and ten forms of wealth or endowment. The former are the freedoms of not being born (1) in one of the hells; (2) as a preta or hungry ghost; (3) as an animal; (4) in the realms of the gods; (5) among barbarians who are ignorant of the teachings and practices of the Buddhadharma; (6) as one with wrong views concerning karma and so forth; (7) in a time and place where a Buddha has not appeared; and (8) as mentally or physically handicapped. The ten forms of wealth or endowment are subdivided into five considered intrinsic and five considered extrinsic to the personality. The five intrinsic endowments are (1) to be born a human being; (2) to inhabit a ‟central land,”i.e., where the Dharma is proclaimed; (3) to be in possession of normal faculties; (4) to be one who is not karmically inclined to great negativity; and (5) to have faith in the Dharma. The five extrinsic endowments are the facts that (1) a Buddha has appeared in the universe in which one is living, and at an accessible time; (2) that he has expounded the Doctrine; (3) that his Doctrine still persists; (4) that it is practiced; and (5) that one has been accepted as a disciple by a spiritual master. Whereby the aims of beings may be gained. If now I fail to turn it to my profit, How could such a chance be mine again?[p.32]The Way of the Bodhisattva (2006)

For many aeons deeply pondering, The mighty Sages29The Tibetan consistently uses the expression thub pa or thub dbang (able one, powerful one) to translate the Sanskrit muni (sage, ascetic). The translation ‟mighty Sages,” as a synonym of ‟Buddhas,” is an amalgam of these two ideas. saw its benefits, Whereby unnumbered multitudes Are brought with ease to supreme joy.

"Deceived and overmastered by my ignorance, I have taken pleasure in such sin,40Western readers sometimes object to the use of the word sin in translations of Buddhist texts, on the grounds that it carries too many Judeo-Christian associations. They apparently fail to realize that the same principle might equally apply to a host of other terms, such as love, compassion, vow, monk, cause, meditation, etc., whose meanings, in the cultural, philosophical, and religious setting in which they evolved, are notably different from the ideas that they are expected to convey in a Buddhist context. When used to express Buddhist ideas, many common English words require careful redefinition in order to remove exclusively Jewish or Christian connotations. In the case of the word sin, once the associations connected with the doctrine of the Fall, divine punishment, etc., are discounted, its standard meaning (an evil act, whether by nature or by virtue of being a transgression of a vow or precept, that will provoke deadly consequences if not purified by confession) corresponds closely with the sense of sdig pa (Skt. pāpa) as used by Shāntideva. See V. and A. Wallace, p. 24. And seeing now the blame of it, O great protectors, I confess it earnestly!

With joy I celebrate the virtue that relieves all beings From the sorrows of the states of loss,45According to the Buddhist teachings, the experience of beings in saṃsāra falls into six broad categories, states, or realms. Birth in these worlds is the fruit of past karma or action. There are three unfortunate states (the states of loss referred to in this verse) in which suffering predominates over every other experience: that of animals, hungry ghosts, and beings in the hells. There are three fortunate realms where suffering is mitigated by temporary pleasures, namely, the heavens of the gods, the realms of the asuras or demigods, and the human condition. The misery of beings in the lower realms is compounded by the fact that their ability to create the positive energy necessary to propel them into higher existences is very weak, while negativity abounds. Exulting in the happy states enjoyed By those who yet are suffering.46Shāntideva rejoices in the condition of beings in the higher saṃsāric realms of human beings, asuras (demigods), and gods. In all these states, the experience of happiness and pleasure is possible even though they are never beyond the possibility of suffering.

Through these actions now performed48The reference here is to the seven traditional actions of accumulating merit, often expressed in a verse formula known as the ‟seven-branch prayer.” These actions are homage, offering, confession, rejoicing in all good actions, the request for teaching, the request that the teachers remain in the world and not pass into nirvāṇa, and dedication. The first three actions formed the content of the previous chapter; the remaining four are expressed here in the opening stanzas of chap. 3. See Crosby and Skilton, pp. 9–13, for a description of the ‟sevenfold supreme worship.” And all the virtues I have gained, May all the pain of every living being Be wholly scattered and destroyed!
