The Way of the Bodhisattva Illuminated: Stories and Recitation Guide

This collection presents exemplary Buddhist narratives illustrating key verses of Śāntideva's Bodhicaryāvatāra (The Way of the Bodhisattva). Each tale demonstrates profound Buddhist principles such as the importance of respecting all worthy beings, the rarity of human rebirth, and the transformative power of bodhicitta (the awakening mind). These morally instructive stories feature kings, merchants, animals, and divine beings to illuminate the path of the bodhisattva—one who dedicates themselves to achieving enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. The tales consistently emphasize the superiority of spiritual wealth over material possessions and demonstrate how bodhisattvas transform adversity into opportunity for both their own spiritual development and that of others.

Tales of Engaging The Way of the Bodhisattva

This collection, ascribed to the thirteenth-century Tibetan author Tsonawa Sherap Zangpo (though his authorship remains uncertain), presents exemplary Buddhist narratives illustrating key verses from all nine chapters of Śāntideva's Way of the Bodhisattva. Through morally instructive tales featuring kings, merchants, animals, and divine beings, these stories illuminate the bodhisattva path—the journey of one who dedicates themselves to achieving enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. The narratives demonstrate core Buddhist teachings including the rarity of human rebirth, the transformative power of bodhicitta (the awakening mind), impermanence, mental discipline, patience, compassion, and the certainty of karmic consequences. From complete selflessness and generous sacrifice to the dangers of anger and the power of sincere refuge, these parables emphasize that spiritual wealth surpasses material possessions and that unwavering commitment to compassionate vows leads to liberation. Together, they offer a guide to the bodhisattva ideal, showing how practitioners transform adversity into opportunity for both their own spiritual development and that of all beings.

The Mirror Clarifying the Results of Karma: A Narrative Commentary on The Way of the Bodhisattva

The Mirror Clarifying the Results of Karma (Byang chub sems dpa'i spyod pa la 'jug pa'i sgrung 'grel las 'bras gsal ba'i me long) is a narrative commentary by Wangchuk Rinchen (c. twelfth century) that elaborates on the illustrative anecdotes found in the ten chapters of the Bodhicaryāvatāra. A disciple of Latö Könchok Khar who later became the abbot of Nering, Wangchuk Rinchen composed this work to illuminate the moral and spiritual lessons embedded in Śāntideva’s text. The stories were translated by Gregory Forgues and Khenpo Könchok Tamphel.
