Description

This article by Kōkan Fujita of Kōyasan University examines the acceptance of unwholesome acts within the bodhisattva precepts as expounded in the Śīla-paṭala of the Yogācārabhūmi. The article situates this teaching within two major streams of Mahāyāna bodhisattva ethics: the Śāntideva tradition (shi ba lha'i lugs) associated with the Madhyamaka school, and the Asaṅga tradition (thogs med kyi lugs) associated with the Yogācāra school. Focusing on the ninth of the forty-four transgressions (āpatti) enumerated in the Śīla-paṭala, the article argues that a bodhisattva acting from compassion and skillful means (upāya-kauśalya) with a mind free from defilement may perform the first seven of the ten unwholesome acts without incurring transgression, provided the motivation is solely the benefit of sentient beings. The article further examines related passages in Sāgaramegha's commentary on the Bodhisattvabhūmi, the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra, and Asaṅga's Mahāyānasaṃgraha. The author concludes that the acceptance of unwholesome acts in these sources operates at a supramundane level grounded in the bodhisattva's pure motivation, and does not constitute a sanction for such conduct in ordinary worldly contexts.
