This academic society originated on May 16, 1928 (Showa 3), when Kaiho Watanabe (Taisho University) visited Kyoto and proposed the establishment of a nationwide academic society solely for the purpose of Buddhist studies to representatives of Buddhist universities and vocational schools in Kyoto. Following Watanabe's proposal, representatives of Buddhist universities and vocational schools in Kyoto held numerous discussions regarding the establishment of the society, and on December 9 of the same year, the inaugural ceremony and the first conference were held at Otani University. This academic society is an affiliated academic research organization of the Science Council of Japan. It is also a member of the Federation of Japanese Societies for Religious Studies.
