This article by Saito Akira examines the Bodhisattvacaryāvatārapiṇḍārtha ("The Concise Meaning of (Śāntideva's) 'Entering into the Deeds of a Bodhisattva'"), a digest of the Bodhicaryāvatāra transmitted by Gser gling pa (Suvarṇadvīpa Dharmapāla), the teacher from whom Atiśa (982–1054) received his bodhisattva practice lineage. The article presents a critical edition and Japanese translation of the text—a collection of 29 (or 30) verses selected from all ten chapters of the ten-chapter recension of the Bodhicaryāvatāra—and examines its textual relationship to three Tibetan translations of the Bodhicaryāvatāra (the early Dunhuang version, the Atiśa-Tsultim Gyalwa co-translation, and the later Rngog Blo ldan shes rab recension). The article further analyzes the relationship between the selected verses and the eleven principal themes (gtso bo'i don) attributed to Gser gling pa's interpretation of the Bodhicaryāvatāra, showing how these themes—including intention (āśaya), aspiration (praṇidhāna), patience (kṣānti), and result (phala)—correspond to the ten chapters of the text and reflect Gser gling pa's distinctive understanding of bodhisattva practice as the path to buddhahood, which subsequently influenced Atiśa and the Kadampa tradition.
