The display of these could use some work. Perhaps the "Reference" info could appear and then the description with a hover over, rather than the descriptions? I'm not sure. Some look funny, others OK. Perhaps we can review? Also this page loads VERY VERY slowly for me. Like minutes of waiting...and often ends in just a red bar that says "undefined"

Suggestion: adding some text above or below the video. I think it might be helpful for first-time viewers and newcomers to Buddhism. While the title appears on the YouTube video, I feel like it's easy to overlook. Say someone is on the subway train, can't play the audio (or a circumstance like that) it may be beneficial for "New here? Start here." sort of text. Or even just a short copy that repeats some of the video. Not too long, but that maybe helps guide someone again to the discover button.

It's otherwise straightforward, neat, and feels good as the landing page. I really do like how it's set up. But I was "searching" for where to go, what's here, what's what. It wasn't completely intuitive... I think there's an audience that will feel like I feel and get it. I'm writing this more so for the newcomer. It's there, but maybe just a slight bit more leading. That way new people can be funneled through a curated experience, and those of us who get into that searching state, will also be looking straight for that and going to the other doorways. They're already interested and looking for a text. New people have that fresh interest that maybe could use that first couple lines of text under the video. "Welcome to the website, here is a video introduction to the project and website. If you're new here, click the discover button to..."

This could also be incorporated as a chat pop-up, maybe? like some websites, where you go, and it pops in the bottom right. that "new here, start here" sort of thing. I suppose the only problem with that would be trying to keep it just on the landing page, and a way to be disabled for people coming back. Though it's a minor inconvenience to close.

Just some thoughts on that. But again, the landing page looks great. The intro animation is captivating! The video is well done; audio is great and easy to follow. It just happened that when I started to explore the page I didn't pick up on "discover" right away. I didn't get drawn into that text under. I know one would hope people were taking their time and reading things through but we know this age people don't always.

At the very bottom of the page, below the Tibetan text but above the footer, there is a list of Categories that this page is tagged with, each a hyperlink that shows all other pages with that tag. One of the tags is "Pages without a Tibetan description" and it links to: https://bodhicitta.tsadra.org/index.php/Category:Pages_without_a_Tibetan_description which just seems like an internal tag, not a user-facing tag. I could be wrong, maybe this is a feature, it just struck me as odd.

There is no feedback button on the search results page. So I post it here.

If you search a Tibetan phrase in Wylie and the same in unicode, you get different results.

I would also propose a possibility to switch between "exact matches" and "approximative matches", because for instance, searching for རྗོད་དུ་ཡོད་པའི་འདུ་ཤེས་ཀྱི་ཚུལ་གྱིས་དམིགས་པ་, you do not get at the top the best result, i.e. a quotation form the Ākāśagarbhasūtra, but an approximate match "Bodhicaryāvatāra/Verses/9.2" (searching in unicode) or "Issues of Controversy and Their Development (section Topic I: The Interpretation of BCA IX.1)" (searching in Wylie)

Patrul's wonderful 4 lines would be good to cite earlier in the website as how the prayer corresponds to the Bodhicaryavatara. Some people know those lines as a stand alone prayer but that prayer really comes to life in a different way when they see it is an outline of sorts to this great text.

I wonder if it would be useful to mention how one's life changes when the pilot light of bodhicitta is lit? I always tell my students it is as if you get a new assignment in life, whether it is one of changed perspective, or more frequently, opportunities to be of benefit to a greater number of beings. My petri dish for observing this is my own life but more importantly, what I've seen with the inmates I worked with who awakened their hearts to interconnectedness and love and emerged into lives of service in ways they could never have imagined. I always like what Skilton/Crosby write in their translator's introduction of their translation of the Bodhicaryavatara (pg xxxvi my copy) "As it is, Awakening Mind' risks the possibility of reification by the unwary reader, and so we hope that readers will remember that the arising of the Awakening Mind involves the internal transformation of the individual rather than the evocation of an external entity. This latter is not to be confused with the sense in which Shantideva talks of the Awakening Mind as a force which is active within the universe." This last sentence in the quote I feel is really important to convey, so people can get the sense that we as individuals open into this force that is there for us to open into, and all the trainings and practices we do will move us into that force, that energy. Versus something people can acquire by simply doing practices without the heart hero's constant intention and without doing their own constant hard work with their kleshas. Many dharma students in the west see these practices as commodities, something to be consumed, but I think it is useful to see that awakening of bodhicitta happens in a certain sense by de-consuming. Hope that makes some sense.

I'd love to see included Crosby/Skiltons translation, as the intros are superb. Also maybe a few lines about the differences between the translations from the Skt vs from the Tibetan.

Khunu Rinpoche's book "Vast as the Heavens, Deep as the Sea" is a lovely book, perhaps it is a re-titled version of what you mention. The Life of Shabkar gives a great presentation of the every day saturated with bodhicitta life.

The new commentary The Great Hum is extraordinary. Commentary by Minyak Kunzang Sonam, translated by Douglas Duckworth.

Curious if it'd be helpful to lift out upfront the correlation between the 6PF and the text-or both of Santideva's texts. It is mentioned here and there, but I've found it really useful for students who don't see that right off to open their eyes to how the core Mahayana teachings are woven into the large fabric of texts over and over.

In the Spanish translation:

1) Chapters 1-7 and 10 don't show the number of the title alongside the Tibetan (ej. "2. La confesión"). I've checked the Google Spreadsheet and it's there, so there's something preventing them from being displayed on the webiste.

2) Chapters 8 and 9 display the chapter title and the verses in English, even though it's set to Spanish. Once this is fixed, I suggest double-checking that the same issue of point 1) is fixed.

Thank you!
11 26-01-10: DamchoGyaltsen Bodhicaryāvatāra
During the last months, one of the most useful resources of the website for me was the bilingual presentation of the commentaries of the BCA. However, right now I'm almost unable to easily find the way to access this resource, and when I've managed to access it, it's been by trial and error clicking here and there. I believe this could be easily fixed if, on the first block of text on this page (second paragraph), a hyperlink to the corresponding site could be added: "You can compare commentaries from different traditions on each verse...".

I'd also try to explore ways to make this wonderfully hepful content more visible in this and other pages.

Thank you :)
12 26-01-10: DamchoGyaltsen Texts/Bodhicaryāvatāra/Verses
In th Spanish translation, there's no Spanish along the very final line of the BCA: "བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའི་སྤྱོད་པ་ལ་འཇུག་པ་སློབ་དཔོན་ཤཱནཏ་དེ་བས་མཛད་པ་རྫོཊ་སོ།། །།". The Spanish is in the spreadsheet ("Esto completa el Bodisatvacharyavatara, "La práctica del bodisatva”, que fue compuesto por el maestro Shantideva."), so something is preventing it from being displayed. Thanks!
13 26-01-10: DamchoGyaltsen Texts/Bodhicaryāvatāra/Verses
In the Spanish translation too:

1) The title of the chapter does not appear besides the Tibetan. It should be "1. Elogio a la bodichita".

2) The Romanized Sanskrit and Tibetan titles also don't appear besides the Tibetan. I suggest including it to fill in the blank, like it's been done in the English version. It only needs to say "En sánscrito: Bodhicharyāvatāra. En tibetano: Changchub Sempe Chopala Yukpa - La Práctica del Bodhisattva"
14 26-01-10: DamchoGyaltsen Texts/Bodhicaryāvatāra/Verses
In the Spanish translation, chapter 1: The Spanish of the initial homage "སངས་རྒྱས་དང་བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའ་ཐམས་ཅད་ལ་ཕྱག་འཚལ་ལོ། །" does not appear. I've checked in the Google Spreadsheet and it does appear in the corresponding cell. It's "¡Homenaje a todos los budas y bodisatvas!"

From this verse on, there is misalignment of Sanskrit and Tibetan/English versions. The Sanskrit on this page seems to be repetition or superfluous. La Valle Poussin, Sharma Pramanda and Vaidya say Minayev has it but they drop it but retain Minayev's numbering but they leave v.21 out. We should delegate this Sanskrit to footnote so that other verses align.

I am not a translator so I may be wrong but in the verse:

"Bodhichitta, the awakened mind, Is known in brief to have two aspects: First, aspiring, bodhichitta in intention; Then active bodhichitta, practical engagement.”

There are no words for "First” and "Then” in the tibetan version that is on the right. I guess it should be: "Aspiring, bodhichitta in intention AND

active bodhichitta, practical engagement.”

To the "basic meaning” of བདག་མེད། I would add that it is the meaning according to Vaybhasika school because it has a different (deeper meaning) for the other more developed philosophy schools. i.e Svatantrika, Prasangika, etc.

In the opening paragraph I would separate out a short sentence at the beginning of each paragraph followed by text;

[ Buddhism represents a way of life focused on inner transformation through cultivating positive mental states and is sometimes referred to as a science of mind or an art of mind training.]

The Buddha was a pragmatic teacher who taught a way to go beyond suffering and achieve a state of awakening and eternal happiness. As happiness and suffering are essentially states of the mind, the Buddhist path is centered on the inner state of the mind or consciousness. It is aimed at clearly understanding the true nature of mind and seeking, through such insight, a full transformation of the individual both morally and cognitively. Through the use of many techniques and methods, it strives to bring one from a distracted mind to a focused one, from agitated to calm, from malicious to loving, from dull to intelligent, from selfish to selfless, and so forth.

[At the heart of the Buddhist endeavor to understand and transform the mind lie compassion and wisdom], Compassion is understood to be the earnest wish to eliminate the suffering of all beings, and wisdom, the ability to see through the beguilement of our ordinary existence and discern the ultimate nature of all things.

Bodhicitta is the unity of such wisdom and compassion, and the tradition which mainly promotes wisdom and compassion as a way of life and primary path to freedom and ultimate happiness is known as Mahāyāna.
