Description

Chapter 25 of Tāranātha's History of Buddhism in India covers a period defined by several regional kings and the Buddhist scholars active during their reigns. The chapter traces the political landscape of the era—including kings Cala of Mālava, Pañcasiṃha in the east, and Prasanna of Magadha—before turning to detailed accounts of individual Buddhist masters. Notable among these are Guṇamati, who composed commentaries on the Abhidharmakośa and Madhyamaka-mūla; Dharmapāla, who succeeded Candrakīrti as preceptor of Nālandā; and Virupa, whose encounters with ḍākinīs and subsequent tantric accomplishments are recounted at length. The chapter's centerpiece is a celebrated account of Śāntideva at Nālandā—his outwardly idle appearance, his composition of the Śikṣāsamuccaya, Sūtrasamuccaya, and Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, and his miraculous levitation during the public recitation of the latter. The chapter also includes accounts of Sarvajñāmitra, whose life is marked by extraordinary acts of compassion and the miraculous intervention of Tārā. Throughout, Tāranātha notes variant traditions among Kashmiri, Eastern, and Central Indian sources regarding the textual history of Śāntideva's works.
