Here we have another translation of Śāntideva's Bodhicaryāvatāra (see my review of the Padmakara Translation Group's rendition,[1] Tibet Journal Vol. 24, No. 2, for comments on previous versions). The translators are not new to the subject: a decade ago, B. Alan Wallace published a version of Chapter Nine (on the Perfection of Wisdom), together with a commentary by the Dalai Lama.[2] The advantage of this new book is that it constitutes a translation of the Sanskrit editions of de la Vallée Poussin and P.L. Vaidya but with reference also to the Tibetan sDe dge edition, and where the two differ, a translation of the Tibetan variants is given in footnotes. Furthermore, the translators consulted the Pañjikā commentary of Prajñākaramati, and the Tibetan commentaries of rGyal tshab dar ma rin chen and Thub bstan chos kyi grags pa, and the footnotes include some explanatory material drawn from these sources.
