Yet Tsongkhapa’s Notes on the Wisdom Chapter say that the sūtras that teach the applications of mindfulness teach both selflessnesses.311See Tsongkhapa, Notes on the Wisdom Chapter, 615; see also Tsongkhapa, Bright Mind: Commentary on the Wisdom Chapter of the “Way of the Bodhisattva,” 886–888. Here, in accord with the viewpoint of the root text of the Way of the Bodhisattva, meditation on the selflessness of persons is taught by means of the six elements, [IX.57] The teeth, hair, and nails . . . , 9.57 and [IX.78] The body is not the feet . . . 9.78 It teaches a meditation on the selflessness of phenomena by means of the four applications of mindfulness. The commentaries also explain it this way. These two are mutually illustrative, so there is no conflict.
