Collected in one book for the first time in the modern era: The Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra, or The Way of the Bodhisattva (BCA), and The Śikṣāsamuccaya, or The Compendium of Training. Available for free as a PDF online at Bodhicitta.org

This "Tsadra Critical Edition" was created for the Bodhicitta Resource Project by comparing four versions of the text from Derge, Cone, Narthang, and Peking Tengyurs from BDRC scans, along with Dunhuang manuscripts IOL Tib J 628, 629, and 630. When Tibetan readings were problematic, the Sanskrit texts from GRETIL and LTB (Oslo) were consulted.

The book includes an extensive introduction in English covering the life of Śāntideva with reference to special sources, the history and legacy of his texts and teachings, as well as research on the history and origins of the Śikṣāsamuccaya.

Also available in a limited "deluxe" edition with box.

༄༅། །བྱང་ཆུབ་སེམས་དཔའི་སྤྱོད་པ་ལ་འཇུག་པ་ཞེས་བྱ་བ་བཞུགས་སོ། ། Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra

On this page you will find a new version of the Tibetan text of Śāntideva's Bodhicaryāvatāra (The Way of the Bodhisattva), edited based on comparing four versions of the text from Derge, Cone, Narthang, and Peking Tengyurs from BDRC scans, along with Dunhuang manuscripts IOL Tib J 628, 629, and 630. When Tibetan readings were problematic, the Sanskrit texts from GRETIL and LTB (Oslo) were consulted.

The work has been critically edited to give readers an improved version and a clear idea of the different recensions. However, we have avoided making it too pedantic and footnote-heavy by capturing all orthographic and stylistic differences. The collated pedur edition produced in China in recent times has already done this. We preserved variant readings and other differences in the footnotes, mainly when they impact the meaning. Generally speaking, the Derge and Chone versions fall into one group and the Narthang and Peking editions into another. The common versions of The Way of the Bodhisattva appear to be independent of the Tengyur versions, keeping the best readings from both groups, and they sometimes even align to the old Dunhuang version. This indicates that the texts belonging to the same recension as the Dunhuang version were perhaps available to editors and commentators working on The Way of the Bodhisattva even after the 11th century.

༄༅། །བསླབ་པ་ཀུན་ལས་བཏུས་པའི་ཚིག་ལེའུར་བྱས་པ་བཞུགས་སོ། ། Śikṣāsamuccaya

On this page you will find a new version of the Tibetan text of The Śikṣāsamuccaya (Compendium of Training), which is a thorough presentation of bodhicitta cultivation in classical Mahāyāna literature, yet it remains much less studied than its companion work, the Bodhicaryāvatāra. Attributed to the eighth-century Indian master Śāntideva, this large anthology organizes scriptural passages around twenty-seven memorial verses to give an authoritative foundation for understanding altruistic motivation and the complete bodhisattva path.
