And, [IX.53] Thus, with this position of emptiness . . . 9.53 It says several times that one should meditate on emptiness; I will say a bit here about the reason for this. Even if you wish for just liberation, then you should meditate on special insight after cultivating the wisdom that unerringly ascertains the reality of selflessness. This is because even non-Buddhists have a mere calm abiding that is nonconceptual, clear, and free from laxity and agitation. They are also able to perform minor miracles and achieve paranormal powers (mngon shes) based on that. Mere calm abiding just temporarily suppresses some of the manifest afflictions, but it cannot eliminate their potentials and is not able to counter in the slightest the apprehension of a self that is the root of existence. When the conditions are met with again, they will become manifest. It is said in the Praise of Confession (Deśanāstava):
