Here is what this means: “this suffering” delimits the aggregates to this life, which are relinquished without exception. In terms of suffering in future lives, it is said that there will be no continuing with other sufferings. This passage shows that when nirvana without remainder is actualized, all the aggregates without exception are exhausted. As is stated in the Sublime Continuum, “Since the afflictions are exhausted from the beginning . . . ,”256Maitreya, Sublime Continuum, v. 14 (Uttaratantra, D. 4024), 55b; English trans. in Fuchs, Buddha-Nature, 110. it is reasonable to explain this to mean the actualization of nirvana without remainder, through having actualized a cessation—which is an exhaustion of intrinsic nature from the beginning—of all conditioned phenomena and aggregates due to all constructs of dualistic appearances being pacified in the perspective of the gnosis of the path of liberation that is a Hīnayāna Arhat’s meditative equipoise on emptiness. Nevertheless, it is not reasonable for the meaning of “exhaustion” to be the exhaustion of intrinsic nature because realists accept that the aggregates intrinsically exist.
