As for Asaṅga, he was born about 900 years after our teacher died. He distinguished the sūtras that are definitive and provisional in meaning and lived for 150 years, as stated in the great commentary on the viewpoint cited in the Root Tantra of Mañjuśrī.12Root Tantra of Mañjuśrī, 408a–408b. Even though he was a third-ground bodhisattva, he taught Mind-Only for a while to train Vasubandhu, as was stated by Dharmamitra in his explanation in Clarifying Words (Prasphuṭapadā).13See Dharmamitra, Clarifying Words (Prasphuṭapadā, D. 3796), 8b–9a. Thus, he disclosed the tradition of Mind-Only in order to take care of those with the Mind-Only heritage. Nevertheless, his consummate viewpoint lies in Prāsaṅgika, as is very clear in the commentary he composed on the Sublime Continuum (Uttaratantra).
