| English | The main commentator on the viewpoint of Nāgārjuna is Āryadeva, his foremost son. He composed many treatises on sūtra and tantra, such as the Four Hundred Verses (Catuḥśataka). Followers regard him to be genuinely like Nāgārjuna, so early scholars called these two “Mādhyamikas of the source texts” (gzhung phyi mo’i dbu ma pa), while referring to the others as “partisan Mādhyamikas” (phyogs ’dzin pa’i dbu ma pa). The reason for this is that they did not take a side upon dividing Madhyamaka into Prāsaṅgika and Svātantrika. Since they are engaged with both Prāsaṅgika and Svātantrika in general, they are “Mādhyamikas of the source.” Partisan Mādhyamikas clearly distinguish the positions of Prāsaṅgika or Svātantrika based on scripture and reasoning.
