| English | The commentary on the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way by Buddhapālita first initiated the tradition of explaining the consummate viewpoint of the text as Prāsaṅgika. Nevertheless, he did not clearly express the way that reductios are suitable and autonomous arguments are not. After him, master Bhāviveka wrote his commentary on the Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, the Lamp of Wisdom (Prajñāpradīpa), where he voiced several problems in each of the reductios found in Buddhapālita’s commentary, in contexts such as those where production from the four extremes is refuted. Bhāviveka expressed many reasons why it is necessary to formulate autonomous arguments, and was the first to initiate the tradition of Svātantrika commentary. |
