| English | Discriminating analysis is conceptual, but there is no conflict in nonconceptual gnosis arising from it. Fire comes from two sticks rubbing together in the wind, and burns the sticks. Likewise, the fire of wisdom comes from discerning concepts, and burns the conceptual wood. This example is taught in sūtras and is explained in the Stages of Meditation.416Kamalaśīla, Stages of Meditation II, 49b. The statement, “Thinking that material forms and so on are empty and selfless is to engage in signs,” negates the apprehension of emptiness as truly existent; it does not negate discernment. The Condensed Perfection of Wisdom says: “When the conditioned and the unconditioned, and virtuous and unvirtuous phenomena, have been deconstructed by wisdom, and there is not the slightest thing observed, the world moves into the transcendent perfection of wisdom.”417Condensed Perfection of Wisdom, 195b. It says that when the weapon of wisdom deconstructs phenomena as not existing in the slightest way essentially, a lack of intrinsic existence is seen, which becomes the transcendent perfection of wisdom. The Cloud of Jewels says: “Through investigation by special insight, essencelessness is realized and signlessness engaged.”418A similar meaning is expressed in a passage found in the Cloud of Jewels Sūtra, 146a. |
