| English | The sequence of these two is like this: In the beginning, when it is newly engendered, calm abiding must be accomplished first. Then based on this, special insight must be accomplished. This is stated in the Sūtra Explaining the Intent and the Stages of Meditation. It is explained this way in the contexts of all the explanations on the sequence of the latter two of the six transcendent perfections meditative concentration and wisdom and the latter two of the three trainings meditative stabilization and wisdom. It is also explained that later, calm abiding can be cultivated based on special insight. In our text here, both of these are taught: [VIII.4] First, seek out calm abiding . . . 8.4, and [IX.92] Meditative concentration that grows from the field of investigation . . . 9.92 Moreover, when calm abiding is not attained, one cannot generate pliancy even by doing analytic meditation. Since it can be produced at the end of an analytic meditation that has achieved calm abiding, calm abiding is necessary before special insight. Yet being preceded by calm abiding is not necessary otherwise for an understanding (go ba) of the view that realizes selflessness to arise, or for just a mentally transformative experience (myong ba) of that to arise. |
