It means that an intrinsically existent person is not found, but it does not mean that a person does not exist even conventionally. Without investigation or analysis, a person that is merely designated in dependence upon its aggregates is undeniably established by a source of knowledge. The Introduction to the Middle Way says: “In reality or . . . are designated in dependence upon their bases of designation.”378Candrakīrti, Introduction to the Middle Way, VI.158. The Degé edition of the Tibetan of Candrakīrti’s text reads “parts” (yan lag) rather than “bases of designation” (gdags gzhir). Candrakīrti, Introduction to the Middle Way (Madhyamakāvatāra, D. 3861), 212a. The earlier reasoning also should be applied here as well. |
