| English | The bodhisattva corpus explains just these four root downfalls; they are defeats from the aspect of their intention. In this way, they are set forth from the aspect of four kinds of intention: an intention that is attached to acquisitions and esteem, an intention that is stingy with possessions, an intention to harm sentient beings, and an intention that is deluded that does wrong by the Dharma. [Abhayākaragupta’s] Ornament of the Sage’s Thought says that there are eight defeats, and [Ratnākaraśānti’s] commentary on the Anthology of Sūtras also clearly says that there are eight defeats, as Asaṅga explained.409See Tsongkhapa, Highway to Awakening, 46b; English trans. in Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 163. Likewise, as the previous spiritual guides in the lineage of the great Lord Atiśa delineated eight defeats as well, the division into eight distinct defeats is made from the aspect of the endeavor: (1) praising oneself, (2) denigrating another, (3) not giving the Dharma, (4) not giving wealth, (5) not accepting an apology, (6) beating a sentient being, (7) forsaking the Mahāyāna, and (8) teaching a bogus Dharma. Thus each one is a defeat. Nevertheless there is no conflict with the aforementioned four; other than simply being a concise categorization, their meaning is essentially the same point. |
