If a śrāvaka steals another’s wealth of sufficient value out of attachment, then this is a defeat. Similarly, someone who is destitute—suffering from being deprived of the enjoyments of either wealth or Dharma, and who has no other protector to give them money or the Dharma—might come up to you for the purpose of making a request of this from you. When you have the thing to give and it is not something that would do them harm (like a weapon or poison), if you are overwhelmed by a mindset of stinginess and decide not to give either the Dharma you have ascertained or the money that is appropriate to give, then this is, respectively, the defeat of not giving the Dharma or wealth. |
