| English | The third act that is like a ground for defeat is the defeat of harming a sentient being. If a śrāvaka kills a person or a person-to-be, then this is a defeat. Similarly, another person who had harmed you in the past and has remorse might ask for forgiveness at an appropriate time and in a way that accords with the Dharma, wishing to make a sincere apology for that wrongdoing. Yet, if you become moved by resentment at what they had previously done and are motivated by a malicious intent without listening to their words or accepting their apology—without letting go of your rage; or if you are motivated by hateful thoughts and express harsh words to another who is of the same species and can understand that meaning; and further, you don’t just leave your rage at that, but perpetuate it—becoming overwhelmed by rage, through actions with your actual body or with something that is propelled by it or connected to it, and you punish them with things like strikes, beatings, and detention, or by binding and branding them with metal and so forth, then this is a defeat of not accepting an apology and beating. |
