In order to liberate others it is necessary to be free oneself; and Shāntideva is saying that the purification of oneʼs own defilements is the best way of helping others. It is the indispensable first step. He did not have the measure of his own capacity and to make such an ill-considered promise was, to be sure, an act of madness. For it was as if he had promised to save someone while he was himself bound and drowning in the water. But pledges are to be honored nevertheless! Therefore Shantideva tells himself that he must never draw back from his task but must apply antidotes in order to overcome his enemies, his defilements. Now that he has promised, he must strive with utmost diligence.

Āvaraṇa - Literally, that which obscures or conceals. Often listed as a set of two obscurations (sgrib gnyis): the afflictive emotional obscurations (Skt. kleśāvaraṇa, Tib. nyon mongs pa'i sgrib pa) and the cognitive obscurations (Skt. jñeyāvaraṇa, Tib. shes bya'i sgrib pa). By removing the first, one becomes free of suffering, and by removing the second, one becomes omniscient. Skt आवरण  Tib སྒྲིབ་པ་
