May rains of flowers and every precious gem

Fall down in an unceasing stream Upon the Jewels of Sacred Dharma,38The expression ‟Jewels of Sacred Dharma” refers to the Dharma of realization and the Dharma of transmission, i.e., the scriptures. The latter is divided into twelve categories: (1) sūtra (Tib. mdo sde), condensed discourses covering a single topic; (2) geya (Tib. dbyangs bsnyad), poetic epitome (of more detailed teachings in prose); (3) vyākarana (Tib. lung bstan), prophecies; (4) gāthā (Tib. tshigs bead), discourses in verse; (5) udāna (Tib. ched du brjod pa), teachings not requested by anyone but spoken intentionally by the Buddha in order to propagate the Dharma; (6) nidāna (Tib. gleng gzhi), instructions following specific incidents (e.g., the rules of Vinaya); (7) avadāna (Tib. rtogs brjod), life stories of certain contemporaries of the Buddha; (8) itivṛittaka (Tib. de Ita bu byung ba), historical accounts; (9) jātaka (Tib. skyes rabs), previous lives of the Buddha; (10) vaipulya (Tib. shin tu rgyas pa), long expositions of vast and profound teachings; (n) adbhūtadharma (Tib. rmad byung), extraordinary unprecedented teachings; (12) upadesha (Tib. gtan dbab), topics of specific knowledge that clinch the meaning of the Vinaya and the Sūtras. The latter are the classifications of saṃsāric phenomena (aggregates, elements, āyatanas); the outline of the phenomena of the path (grounds and paths of realization, various concentrations); and the enumeration of the phenomena of the result (the kāyas, wisdoms, etc.).

Images and all supports for offering.

We then imagine that a shower of jewels and flowers and every precious thing falls unceasingly upon the Jewel of the sacred Dharma of transmission and realization, including all the volumes of the scriptures. It is said in fact that when the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas teach the Dharma, there falls a rain of flowers—a phenomenon called the "miracle occurring when the Dharma appears.” Therefore let a rain of flowers fall whenever the teachings of transmission are given and received! Moreover, just as it is said that when the Buddha, the Blessed One, achieved perfect enlightenment, the gods of the Heaven of the Pure85This is the first level of the first samadhi of the form realm. See Treasury, p. 414. caused a rain of flowers to fall, so too, whenever the Dharma of realization arises in the mind, may there fall a rain of flowers. Let it also fall upon all the supports of offering, such as stupas, the representations of the dharmakaya.
