Description

The great bodhisattva Śāntideva was born as a prince in Saurāṣṭra, yet, following the prophecies of the noble Mañjuśrī and Tārā, he perceived the sensual pleasures of the kingdom as if they were the scalding waters of hell. Fleeing into the forest, he attained inconceivable levels of samādhi and primordial wisdom. While residing at the great monastic center of Nālandā, he appeared to others as a simple "bhusu ku" who only ate, slept, and defecated, but in reality, he was deeply immersed in yogic practice. He composed magnificent treatises such as the Śikṣāsamuccaya and the Sūtrasamuccaya. Eventually, when requested by the monastic assembly to recite a discourse, he delivered the Bodhicaryāvatāra, a work previously unknown. During the chapter on wisdom, he ascended into the sky, his voice continuing uninterrupted until he finished the entire text. His biography records seven miraculous accounts, including his defeat of non-Buddhist tīrthikas and his use of supernatural powers to benefit the destitute.
