English

Those who practice the Dharma of the Mahayana in accordance with the Buddha's intention are known as bodhisattvas.34Bodhisattvas are beings who have realized the empty nature of phenomena and the nonexistence of individual self. They are free from the kleshas, or ordinary emotions. There are ten bodhisattva levels, or bhumis. The eleventh bhumi is that of consummate buddhahood, which is realized when both obscurations—that of the kleshas and that which veils total wisdom—have been cleared in an irreversible way. In a broader sense, a bodhisattva is described as a being engaged in practicing the Mahayana teachings. If you practice the teachings of the Mahayana, you can reach the level of the great bodhisattvas Avalokiteshvara and Mañjushri, in the best case, or become like the Buddha's two main disciples Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, who were gifted with insight and miraculous powers.35Shariputra was said to be particularly gifted with deep insight, and Maudgalyayana particularly gifted with miraculous powers. Even if you are unable to practice to the full in this life, you will at least be reborn among the principal disciples of the future Buddha, Maitreya.
