| English | Here then, starting from the very beginning, the stage of meditating on compassion should be explained. Initially, at the outset, one develops equanimity—thereby clearing away anger and attachment towards any sentient being. Thus even-mindedness should be produced. Thinking, “All sentient beings desire happiness and do not desire suffering. In beginningless saṃsāra there is no sentient being who has not been a relative of mine at least a hundred times,” —what distinction could there be among them that one could be attached to some and angry at others? On that basis, having taken it to heart that one should act with impartiality towards all sentient beings, one begins from a position of neutrality and cultivates this even-mindedness towards friends and enemies alike. |
