Alternatively, some Vaibhāṣikas assert “the non-perishing” (chud mi za ba), which is like a promissory note (bu lon gyi dpang rgya). Other Vaibhāṣikas assert the “acquisition” (thob pa) of an action. These two are posited as that which elicits the maturation of an action. These two are each held to substantially exist as non-associated formations (ldan min ’dus byed) that are separate from the action. These, along with the uninterrupted continuity of predispositions or potencies for action that elicit maturation within the basic consciousness, are our Buddhist traditions’ assertions of the way something with the power to produce a later effect elicits maturation.
