From among these, the self has nine qualities: cognition, which is knowing an object; happiness, which is satisfaction; suffering, which is torment; desire, which is attachment; aversion, which is anger; effort, which is striving to attain a goal; virtue, which is an action that results in happiness; vice, which is the opposite of virtue; and conjunction, which arises from cognition and is the cause of cognition. These qualities are held to rely on nothing but substance; and there are no second qualities of qualities.
