| English | Both the Vaiśeṣikas and the Naiyayikas hold Īśvara as their teacher, and believe that Īśvara is the creator of the entire world of inhabitants and environments. Among them there are some who hold Brahmā and Viṣṇu as their teacher. Since they are followers of a text composed by Kaṇāda clarifying the specifics (viśeṣa),328Vaiśeṣikasūtras. they are called Vaiśeṣikas. There are other ways of explaining this term as well. Since they follow the views of reason (nyāya) set out by Akṣapāda, they are called Naiyayikas. They accept the framework of sixteen categories from the logicians, such as the sources of knowledge and warranted objects.329For a list of these sixteen categories in the Nyāya tradition, following Nyāya Sūtra 1.1.1, see Hiriyanna, Outlines of Indian Philosophy, 245. Vaiśeṣikas accept three sources of knowledge: perception, inference, and testimony. Naiyayikas accept four, adding analogy to those three. |
