| English | As for the six categories, they accept a determined number of six categories as objects of knowledge, as is said: “The sixfold substance, quality, action, universal, particularity, and inherence.”330See Kaṇāda, Vaiśeṣikasūtra, 1.1.5. The definition of the first category among the six, [760] substance, is threefold: that which has action, quality, and is the cause of inherence. There is a ninefold division of substance: earth, water, fire, wind, space, time, direction, self, and cognition. Among these, the self is accepted to substantially exist apart from the body, faculties, and cognition. Further, it is held to be the support of the nine qualities such as cognition, and acts as the cause of the inherence of these qualities. It is held to be mindless material, permanent, unborn, an agent, an enjoyer, all-pervasive, and a partless singularity. Spirit and person have the same meaning as the self. |
