| English | They classify all phenomena within a fixed number of twenty-five categories. If these are known, then it is easy to understand their assertions, so I will state them here: The threefold primal basis (pradhāna), intellect (mahat), and ego (ahaṃkāra); the fivefold “basics” (tanmātra) of form, sound, scent, taste, texture; the fivefold mental-faculties of eye, ear, nose, tongue, and skin or body; the fivefold action-faculties of mouth or speaking, handling, walking, evacuation or buttocks, and reproduction; the eleventh faculty i.e., manas that has the nature of both mind and action; the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space; and the spirit (puruṣa). “The basic materiality” (rtsa ba’i rang bzhin), “the universal” (spyi), and “the primal basis” (gtso bo) have the same meaning. “The intellect” (blo) and “the great” (chen po) have the same meaning. “The self ” (bdag), “the person” (gang zag), and “the spirit” (shes rig gi skyes bu) have the same meaning. These are all said to be comprised within matter and mind; the spirit is mind, and the other twentyfour are matter. There are four alternatives for the twenty-five categories in terms of being materiality and/or a transformation: the primal basis is exclusively materiality; there are seven that are both materiality and a transformation: the intellect, the ego, and the five basics; there are sixteen that are only[p.172]The Profound Reality of Interdependence |
