| English | The Sāṃkhya was the first non-Buddhist school to appear. In an ageless time, there was a sage called Kapila, who had a yellowish-grey topknot and possessed the five paranormal powers. He had a great innate intellect and composed many Sāṃkhya treatises. His followers were called the Kāpilas or Sāṃkhyas. In this school, they claim that an effect is present at the time of the cause and is manifested by conditions. Also, there were atheistic Sāṃkhyas who accepted that things arise from just the primal basis (gtso bo) and there were theistic Sāṃkhyas who accepted that while cause and effect share the same nature, there are separate manifestations through the blessings of Īśvara. Within each of these systems, there are two accounts: one tradition describes the essential identity of cause and effect, which is unmanifest but becomes manifest through the presence of conditions—whereby it is designated with the convention of arising; another propounds transformation, in the way that milk with the nature of curd becomes curd through meeting with conditions. |
