Most proponents of Mind-Only posit the basic consciousness as the basis of characteristics for a person. They say that they accept that a person nominally exists, but they hold that this is the case for just the concept (rang ldog) of a person; they do not accept that a person is necessarily nominally existent. This is because they accept that consciousness and so on that are understood as the basis of characteristics for a person substantially exist. Even though the mere words “nominally existent person” are similar to those of the Prāsaṅgikas, the meaning is not at all alike. Although they accept that a person is designated in dependence upon the aggregates that are its basis of designation, they think that the basis of designation for a person is necessarily a person. They think that the aggregates are designated as a person. Also, they think that if there were no person within the basis of designation for a person, then there would be no person.
