In general, how to understand the subtle and coarse selflessness is like this: Most Buddhist schools of the Svātantrika and below similarly maintain the coarse selflessness of persons to be the emptiness of a person that intrinsically exists as permanent and singular, and maintain the subtle selflessness of persons to be the emptiness of a person existing as a self-subsisting substance. Yet the Vātsīputrīyas do not accept this kind of subtle selflessness of persons. Vaibhāṣikas and Sautrāntikas do not accept the selflessness of phenomena, so they claim that the subtle selflessness and the subtle selflessness of persons have the same meaning. Proponents of Mind-Only claim the coarse selflessness of phenomena to be the emptiness of external objects composed of partless particles; they claim the subtle selflessness of phenomena to be the emptiness of the separate substances of a material form and the source of knowledge apprehending that form, for instance.
