When Arhats who are Disciples or Self-Realized Ones enter the Mahāyāna path, up until the seventh ground they mainly train in the accumulation of merit in postmeditation. In order to make their accumulation of gnosis powerful, they rest one-pointedly in meditative equipoise on emptiness, and so on, [747] training by alternating the practices of the two accumulations. This kind of gnosis of meditative equipoise is not distinguished in terms of being an uninterrupted path or a path of liberation. This is because, if these kinds of conventions were made in terms of the way the things to be eliminated were removed, then there would be no potentials at all to be removed for them up until the seventh ground. It is just like the case of a Hīnayāna Arhat entering the Mahāyāna path at the time of the paths of accumulation or joining. Yet by training in the two accumulations, they develop further and further the distinctive powers of these two. So they move through the higher paths and arrive to the appropriate degree of each one, in terms of dispelling conflicting factors and fulfilling conducive conditions. Through the power of this, they move from the path of accumulation to the path of joining, and move within the path of joining through the four stages, such as “warmth.” Then they move progressively to the first ground and onto the higher grounds, progressively actualizing the distinctive 1,200-fold qualities, and so on. This is most reasonable and is acknowledged as a good explanation.
