| English | Thus, when the apprehension of true existence and the predispositions for attachment and so on produced by it are set in place, there are two predispositions implanted in the mind: (1) one that can produce a subsequent apprehension of true existence, attachment, and so on, similar in type to it, and (2) the subtle predisposition implanted by apprehending true existence that cannot produce a manifest affliction that is an apprehension of true existence, even if it meets with conditions. It can produce merely an appearance of true existence; that is, the objects of the six engaged consciousnesses (such as forms) appearing as if they truly existed, and the potential for this kind of affliction is understood to be a predisposition for afflictions. Within these two, a cognitive obscuration is understood to be the latter predisposition for afflictions. A potential (sa bon) for an affliction is necessarily an afflictive obscuration, but a predisposition (bag chags) for an affliction is not necessarily an afflictive obscuration because there are cognitive obscurations among them as well. |
