English

“The predispositions for ignorance” shows an illustration of a cognitive obscuration; these are the predispositions for apprehending true existence. “Obstacle for discerning cognitive objects” shows the definition of a cognitive obscuration. In terms of engagements of body and speech, assuming a negative state (gnas ngan len) of body due to a predisposition such as attachment, even for Arhats, is like jumping like a monkey. Assuming a negative state of speech due to a predisposition such as hatred is like saying to someone, “you idiot!” Assuming a negative state of mind is said to be “an obstacle for discerning cognitive objects.” This is the subtle aspect of an unclear mind, such that it is difficult to realize the domain of a cognitive object; for instance, it is said that Maudgalyāyana did not know that his mother had been born in the mundane realm of the luminous hell, despite looking for a long time with his paranormal powers. The word “also” shows that these predispositions for attachment and the like are also obstacles for discerning cognitive objects.
