Thus, the definition of a cognitive obscuration is an obscuration of the type that obstructs the simultaneous knowledge of all cognitive objects.[p.154]The Profound Reality of Interdependence
Duckworth, Douglas S., trans. The Profound Reality of Interdependence: An Overview of the Wisdom Chapter of the Way of the Bodhisattva. By Künzang Sönam. New York: Oxford University Press, 2019.
“Cognitive obscurations” (shes sgrib) and “obstructive obscurations” (thogs sgrib) have the same meaning. They have a twofold division: the manifest aspect and the potential aspect. The manifest aspect of a cognitive obscuration is understood to be the distorted aspect of dualistic appearance for which any of its objects, like form, appears as truly existent; it is a type of obscuration that arises in the continuum of a sublime being [744] on the path of training who has completely relinquished apprehending true existence. Cognitive obscuration’s potential aspect is understood to be that which is caused by what is implanted by apprehending true existence and has as its effect the appropriating distortion of dualistic appearance; it is a type of obscuration that arises in the continuum of a sublime being on the path of training who has completely relinquished apprehending true existence. A cognitive obscuration is necessarily innate and is to be removed on the path of meditation; it has no imputed aspects or aspects that are to be removed on the path of seeing.
