The essence of an inferential source of knowledge is the non-deceptive cognition of a remote warranted object that apprehends its object based directly on evidence or a reason. There is a threefold division of inference: (1) inference by the power of fact (dngos stobs), like an inference that realizes emptiness; (2) trustworthy inference, such as an inference that realizes the non-deceptive meaning of a scripture, like “enjoyments come from generosity and happiness from discipline,” by means of scriptural evidence that is pure in terms of the threefold criteria of analysis;204This refers to the process of determining the validity of a scripture. The three analyses are (1) that what is evident (mngon gyur) is not invalidated by perception (mngon sum), (2) that what is remote (lkog gyur) is not invalidated by inference (rjes dpag), and (3) that what is extremely remote (shin tu lkog gyur) is not contradicted (internally) by previous or later statements. and (3) analogical inference, such as an inference that a gayal is similar to a cow. Furthermore, there are others, such as the twofold division of inferential sources of knowledge: those that are based on a consequence and those that are based on a reason with the three modes complete.
