English

There is a fourfold division of sources of knowledge: (1) perception, (2) inference, (3) testimony, and (4) analogy. The number of sources of knowledge is posited based on the warranted objects, and there are determined to be four warranted objects. They are what is evident and what is remote, and within remote objects, there are what is slightly remote, what is extremely remote, and remote phenomena [716] that are like an example. Although they are divided into four, there is a determined number of two sources of knowledge, perception and inference, because the latter two are subsumed within inference. For this reason, there are four sources of knowledge in Clear Words, as there are in the root text and commentary on Dispelling Disputes, whereas two sources of knowledge are described in the commentary on the Four Hundred Verses.202See Candrakīrti, Clear Words, 25b; Nāgārjuna, Autocommentary on “Dispelling Disputes” (Vigrahavyāvartanīvṛtti, D. 3832), 132b; Candrakīrti, Commentary on the “Four Hundred Verses” (Catuḥśatakaṭīkā, D. 3865), 186b.
