How an other-experience is negated with reason is stated in the autocommentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way. If the experiencer were a different substance from the cognition of the experience, whether it be the case that the cognition different from the experiencer were to occur simultaneously or be experienced by a later cognition, there would be two problems. Firstly, there would be the problem that the experiencer would fall into an infinite regress: If the experiencer of cognition were of a different substance from the cognition, like a visual cognition apprehending blue, would another experiencer of cognition of a different substance be necessary or not to experience that cognition? If not, then a substantially different experiencer of cognition was not necessary in the first place. If it were necessary, then that cognition would need another, and there would be the problem of an infinite regress.
