| English | As for the above Mind-Only examples for the nonexistence of external objects and the intrinsic existence of cognition, presenting cognitions in a dream or cognitions with the appearance of floating hairs, and so on, is not reasonable because the examples are not established. This is because these examples show the apparent existence of nonexistent external objects (such as elephants and floating hairs) to establish their unreality. Yet just like these unreal objects, the subjective cognitions are also established to be unreal, not intrinsically existent. Therefore, this argument that shows the pairing of objects and cognitions in these examples—as equally existent or not—is said to be a tremendously powerful argument that refutes the claims of the proponents of Mind-Only. This is stated in the Introduction to the Middle Way: “If you say, ‘it is just like a dream’ this should be considered . . .”174Candrakīrti, Introduction to the Middle Way, VI.64. The last part of the citation, “this should be considered,” is not in the Introduction to the Middle Way. and [707] “If when awake the mind is remembered in the dream . . .”175Candrakīrti, Introduction to the Middle Way, VI.66. There are many arguments that refute a truly existent cognition that is the dependent nature. In our text here as well, there are many arguments that refute truly existent phenomena. |
