| English | Bhāviveka’s follower, master Jñānagarbha, wrote Distinguishing the Two Truths (Satyadvaya) along with its auto commentary. These two, father and son, are referred to as “Sautrāntika-Svātantrika-Mādhyamikas” because they maintain that external objects exist conventionally and do not accept self-awareness. Master Śāntarakṣita composed the Ornament of the Middle Way (Madhyamakālaṃkāra) together with an auto commentary. Since he maintains that external objects do not exist conventionally and affirms self-awareness, he initiated the tradition renowned as “Yogācāra-Svātantrika-Madhyamaka.” His student, Kamalaśīla, composed an excellent Svātantrika text, the Light of the Middle Way (Madhyamakāloka), and also such texts as the Stages of Meditation (Bhāvanākrama). These two, father and son, are said to have been tremendously kind to us in the Land of Snows. Before Śāntarakṣita, there was Vimuktisena. Although he was a Yogācāra-Svātantrika-Mādhyamika, he is not attributed to be the initiator of this tradition. There are others like this. Haribhadra, a student of Śāntarakṣita, is also classified as a Yogācāra-Svātantrika-Mādhyamika.[p.33]The Profound Reality of Interdependence |
