English

Most Vaibhāṣikas and Sautrāntikas, as well as the proponents of Mind-Only following scripture, accept that the engagement with conditioned phenomena ceases at the time of no remainder. The proponents of Mind-Only following reasoning accept no such cessation, since awareness has no beginning or end. Mādhyamikas do not accept that matter or awareness cease at the time of nirvana without remainder. This is because it is held that when it occurs, one is incited by light rays of the Tathāgata’s speech, and is thereby brought to enter the Mahāyāna path.
