In the Golden Light Sūtra (Suvarṇaprabhāsūtra) and the Gateway to the Three Embodiments of Buddhahood (Kāyatrayāvatāramukha) it is said that the two Form Bodies are the nirvana with remainder, and the Truth Body (chos sku) is the nirvana without remainder.135See Golden Light Sūtra (Suvarṇaprabhāsūtra, H. 514, vol. 89), 238b. Nāgamitra’s Gateway to the Three Embodiments of Buddhahood does not explicitly mention nirvana without remainder, but it does describe the Truth Body as unconditioned. See Nāgamitra, Gateway to the Three Embodiments of Buddhahood (Kāyatrayāvatāramukha, D. 3890), 4a. It is nirvana from the aspect of being free from the suffering of the two obscurations; it is said to be with or without remainder from the aspect of whether or not there is a remainder of manifest appearance for disciples. Yet this is not an actual nirvana because an actual nirvana must be the unconditioned truth of cessation, and the two Form Bodies are not this. Even the Truth Body is not necessarily the truth of cessation. The Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way says: “Nirvana[p.91]The Profound Reality of Interdependence

is unconditioned,”136Nāgārjuna, Fundamental Verses of the Middle Way, XXV.13c. and the Treasury of Metaphysics says: “There are three types of unconditioned phenomena: space and the two cessations.”137Vasubandhu, Treasury of Metaphysics, I.5 (Abhidharmakośa, D. 4089), 2a.
