There are several ways of explaining the difference between nirvana with remainder and nirvana without remainder, and whether or not these are accepted as exclusively [696] Hīnayāna nirvanas. Here, to merely give a rough sketch in the system of Madhyamaka in general, nirvana with remainder is an analytical cessation that has completely relinquished afflictive obscurations and has aggregates of suffering impelled by previous karma and afflictions. Nirvana without remainder is understood as an analytical cessation that has completely relinquished afflictive obscurations and is free from aggregates of suffering impelled by previous karma and afflictions.
